Well, we can't really help, although we do have something that might just cheer you up. Some very professional and comprehensive Technology resources have recently been uploaded onto clounagh.org (and more to follow). If you are thinking of introducing a new project at KS3 then you might want to look here first. STEM Funding - Post Primary projects.

A sum of money has been made available to continue to build the professional capacity of STEM teaching staff in Post Primary Schools by developing and promoting the sharing of effective practice at Key Stages 3 and 4. 
Post Primary schools are invited to bid for funding in support of this remit through either:

collaboration between a minimum of 2 STEM Areas of Learning within a school; or

collaboration in relation to the promotion, learning and teaching of an identified STEM subject between a minimum of 2 schools within an Area Learning Community.

KS3 Technology Survey

If you are considering auditing or reviewing your KS3 provision, then it might be a good idea to start with the pupils. As teachers of Technology we all know what works well and what doesn't, or do we? In order to help measure the success of your KS3 programme we have made an on-line survey available. Changes made as a result of findings within this survey could lead to positive changes and enrich the provision of T&D. I have made a copy of this available for everyone within the template gallery in Google Docs. You can access this form by clicking here. Generation Innovation Launched to Stem and Reverse NI Brain Drain

Call for Nominations of Students Most Likely to Succeed in the New Economy

A new initiative, designed specifically to help stem and eventually reverse the brain drain from Northern Ireland has been launched today by the Northern Ireland Science Park and other representatives from the local business community. Generation Innovation is a new initiative designed to build a physical and online network of Northern Ireland’s best young people, before, during and after their third level studies or initial career choice.

At a time when Northern Ireland has the opportunity to become one of the most entrepreneurial knowledge economies in Europe, key to this economic transformation is the availability and active engagement of new young talent who can be tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, business leaders and innovators. Currently, many of Northern Ireland’s brightest and best young people choose to leave NI to study or pursue careers elsewhere and according to research recently published by the Department of Employment and Learning, as many as 6 out of 10 who leave to study in Britain never return here to work. Many others only retain fleeting relationships with home and subsequently miss out on opportunities to pursue their careers or start a business here.

Generation Innovation is designed to address this issue head on and the Steering Group behind it is now inviting the Principals in all relevant secondary and FE Colleges to nominate Lower Sixth form students who have high potential. They will then be among the first members of this exclusive network which will be officially launched in the autumn at a high profile event which will include a number of inspirational speakers from high profile technology companies.

Outlining the purpose of the initiative Norman Apsley, Chief Executive, Northern Ireland Science Park said; “There are major opportunities for Northern Ireland in the global knowledge economy, but that is totally dependent on the availability of the next generation of entrepreneurs, business leaders and innovators. Generation Innovation’s main purpose is to build and maintain a life-long relationship with our best young talent, be they high academic achievers, natural born entrepreneurs or both. While hoping to encourage more young people to either study, work or stay here, we will also encourage those that do move away to continue a closer relationship with home and help build the entrepreneurial economy.

“Importantly in seeking nominations from our schools and colleges we are keen to not necessarily restrict it to the highest academic achievers and will also welcome nominations for students with a perceived or proven entrepreneurial flair or business acumen. Our overall aim is to help establish a thriving entrepreneurial eco-system where innovation, vision and talent flourish and where our young people can play their part in Northern Ireland’s positive economic future.”

Explaining some of the benefits of joining the Generation Innovation network, Lyra McKee, a young entrepreneur and Steering Group member said; “Membership of the Generation Innovation Network will bring with it significant benefits including invites to a number of annual high profile Generation Innovation Networking Events for the student and a parent or guardian as well as access to an exclusive moderated online social network.

“Throughout their membership of the Network students will regularly gain access to and have the opportunity to be guided by some of Northern Ireland’s top business people from a range of Science and Technology companies here and internationally. Schools that support the programme will also be acknowledged for their support. The vision is that the Generation Innovation Network will then grow year on year as new members join creating a positive peer group which supports Northern Ireland’s entrepreneurial agenda.”

The Steering Group behind Generation Innovation is made of representatives of the Northern Ireland Science Park, the wider business community as well as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education promoters.

All principals in relevant secondary schools and FE colleges will now receive a letter outlining details of Generation Innovation and the nomination process and criteria. Nominations should be received before the deadline of 23rd September. ALISON is a for-profit social enterprise based in Galway, Ireland. They are a resourceful and determined multinational team of socially-aware technologists, educationalists, and marketers, who understand that today we have the opportunity to make access to universal education free via the web.

It's free to register and courses vary from health and safety right through to management and leadership. From a technology point of view there are some very interesting and useful courses including manufacturing and design, graphic design and computer aided design. Certification is free with most courses, they are easy to use and can be done at your own pace. Just google Alison and read from there.

3D printing

Over the last 18 months we have been piloting the use of the 3D printer. We have been very impressed with the interest and uptake in the use of accessing the 3D printer either on a loan basis or e-mailing parts via Clounagh. Having seen the potential and with further projected success of this facility, we have now established a cost for rapid prototyping. For further information click here. YouTube (and other sites) now available on C2K!

At last! For all of you out there who recognise YouTube as a very useful and informative resource but thought that this would never be accessible from the C2K network, think again! By getting your school principal to complete form A115 on C2k exchange, teaching staff will be able to access YouTube as well as other useful sites such as Flickr, NING and wordpress to name a few. I have embedded a YouTube video below so as soon as the application has been processed you will be able to watch it.

These include GENIE PIC resources, STEM Metal resources and a new and very exciting IKEA resource that could be used in conjunction with a field trip to IKEA. More material will be added very soon so keep logging on for some quality teaching and learning resources.

Self Evaluation - a process for improvement.

It has always been difficult to keep up with the ever changing nature of jargon surrounding education. Another new buzzword or acronym regularly pops up, saturating an already exhaustive list. The focus however should always remain the same - raising standards through high quality teaching and learning. This can be a difficult thing to start thinking about, particularly if you are a one teacher department and don't have the advantage of the sharing and developing from another technology colleague. It may also be something your department have talked about but have yet to engage in. At this time of year might be worth thinking about conducting some self evaluation. Only through such a process will you arrive at a comprehensive and realistic action plan that should aspire to school improvement. The Technology team at Clounagh have been developing some material to assist in this process, if you would like to find out more or discuss this please feel free to contact Averil or Martin at the Clounagh Centre.

Extended Project - Get some credit.

The WJEC Extended Project qualification can enable Year 13 students to gain UCAS accreditation at AS-Level for their project work, either individually or within a team. Subject to approval of their project title, students can submit a team project with their Extended Project Outcome as their end product. This may be an artifact or model, or electronic or other non-written submission. For this type of project, each student is expected to produce Project Outcome Notes of a minimum of 2,000 words. Tessa Gabriel-Davies, Pathways Development Officer at WJEC, will present the qualification at a meeting in Belfast at: 1.30 pm (tea / coffee and sandwiches will be available form 1.00)

Woodturning update

As you are probably aware the Clounagh Centre ran a 6 week afternoon course in the safe use and operation of the woodturning lathe. The course was well attended and everyone involved was grateful for the valuable instruction of both Tom and Eugene. We would like to thank both instructors who gave up their free time to disseminate their skills and expertise. Due to the success and interest in this course it is hoped that further sessions will be run in the near future.

Solidworks Student Kit Windows 7 - 64 bit version

St Louis' Kilkeel Primary Technology Challenge

The annual Primary Technology Challenge was held in St Louis' Kilkeel on the 14th December 2010. As usual this event was well attended by the local primary schools vying for title of Technology champions. The task was to design and manufacture a flashing Christmas decoration from LED's and various materials. Under the masterful organisation of Mr David Morgan and the beady eye of Damien the technician, they were ably assisted by the sixth form pupils who coached and mentored their partner school to produce a high quality outcome. This year's winners came from Carrick PS, followed by Kilkeel PS in second and St Colman's Kilkeel in third place. Well done to everyone involved in keeping this worthwhile competition going.

Woodturning for schools.

As you may be already aware the Ulster Chapter of the Irish Woodturners Guild have been involved in demonstrating and promoting woodturning in a number of schools over the last year or so. Due to the success of this programme we have decided, along with members of the IWG, to provide some training for teachers in the safe use and operation of the wood turning lathe. This course will run from 4-6 pm for 6 weeks, beginning on Wed the 12th January. Due to limitations in space and equipment we are offering this training initially to those schools who have previously been involved in the woodturning roadshow. A letter detailing more about this will have been emailed to the appropriate schools.

More than just street cred - extended projects.

If you have a number of pupils who are involved in extended projects or activities outside timetable hours then why not turn their efforts into real credits - UCAS points. The WJEC extended project qualification enables year 13 students to complete a project of their own choice (subject to approval from WJEC). The outcome is in the form of a grade A*-E, providing up to 70 points (equivalent to an AS - Level). Projects can be individual or a group effort, providing each person in the group submit a report based on their personal contribution to the project. Turning it on in schools!

If you thought that woodturning was an art of yesteryear, think again. Just as canvas plimsolls have made a comeback in the world of fashion, the art of woodturning has made somewhat of a similar renaissance in the craft world and indeed into education. Eugene Grimley and Tom McCosh have been busy over the last couple of weeks providing a number of demonstrations to various schools in the SELB. This is a programme that has been re-run due to popular demand and as previous the Ulster Chapter of the woodturners guild are offering a number of free workshop places for 1 pupil in each school that they have worked in. These workshops will take place on Saturday the 25th September in Armagh City Hotel. The exhibition is open to the public and is a must for anyone interested in working with wood. There will be an option for full training for beginner users, or half day training for those already familiar with the basics of Solidworks. Solidworks - Student Design Kit now available

There have been a few technical issues but eventually we have it sorted! We have downloaded the Solidworks Student Design kit and have DVD copies available for collection. The DVD also contains instructions on how to put Solidworks on your machine, although an internet connection is required. This student kit will allow your students to work from home and is compatible with the 2009/10 version that is currently on the C2k system. Contact Paul or Martin if you would like a copy.

Bombardier announces the launch of the 2010 Flight Experience Challenge

Bombardier has announced the launch of the 2010 Flight Experience Challenge. It will take place in W5 @ Odyssey, Belfast on Wednesday 28 April. The competition challenges pupils to design, build and fly a self-propelled model aircraft.

There are four catagories

Key Stage 2
Key Stage 3
Key Stage 4/6th Form
Special Schools

The winners of each category will be treated to a VIP day at the Farnborough International Airshow on Friday 23 July 2010 and their schools will each receive £1000.

Bursaries for teacher professional development

The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) has just announced a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Bursary funding programme available during 2010-11.

The funding will be made available to individual teachers wishing to undertake professional activities relating to the NI Curriculum. The programme has been running successfully for five years and as with previous bursary programmes an emphasis is being placed on teacher professional development relating to improvement in teaching and learning for pupils.
The Technology team at Clounagh would be more than happy to support anyone who would be interested in applying for a bursary with a Technology slant.

Health and safety update.

Your school will shortly recieve the new and updated CLEAPSS Resource CD. If however for some reason your department has not received the CD, don't worry. All resources are available online, all you need is a username and password (which can be obtained from the Clounagh Centre). This resource contains a number of model documents which can be customised to suit your particular requirements. Included with the CD that was posted out is the latest bulletin from CLEAPSS, as well as a letter from the Clounagh Centre regarding recommendations from the HSE requiring log books and user manuals for all LEV systems. It's here! The wait is finally over, Solidworks 2009/2010 has arrived. C2K are currently working their way around schools installing the software which has many new features including DWG editor (which will allow you to open, edit and view any DWG file), an updated version of e-drawings as well as photoview 360°. Photoview 360° is a very powerful add in which will allow the user to create incredibly realistic rendered views. C2k exchange will keep you up to date on the latest news surrounding the release, including how to access student kits for free. To access the C2K exchange click on the icon on your desktop.

CNC provision - update!

We are very pleased to announce the arrival of some very high end CAD/CAM equipment at Clounagh. In addition to more Roland MDX-40 machines, the Clounagh Centre have now facilities for laser cutting and 3D printing. These machines are available for schools to use, whereby sending files to Clounagh you can watch the manufacturing process via video conferencing. Contact us if you are interested in going 3D!

The Great Meccano Exhibition & Schools Challenge

This is a fun event in partnership with Meccano (UK) which is organised and run by he Corlust Meccanno Club. They are inviting 6 primary and 6 post primary schools within the Armagh and Down Area to take part in the challenge on the 17th & 18th of October. There is no entry fee or cost involved to the school.
Who can participate?
Each team will comprise of two students and one teacher (or a designated adult representative/parent) from each school. In selecting the participants you may wish to consider those with a general interest in assembling models, using a spanner and following instructions etc. However any student should be capable of assembling the model. Genie - a revolution in PIC

If you are thinking about programmable integrated chips (pic) then your mind obviously turns to PIC logicator. However over the last few months New wave concepts have been developing the GENIE system.
It is a PIC system but with a difference. Through the free GENIE design studio flowchart software (which is C2K compatible), GENIE allows you to add intelligence and control to your design projects. There have been a number of recent inquiries surrounding c2k updates of Solidworks. The good news is that the wait for SW2009 is nearly over.
The new version of Solidworks which is currently being tested, will include a DWG editor (and extensive additional drawing package) as well as student access. It is anticipated that the software will be available towards the end of September, early October. UPDATE - It looks like it may now be the end of October.

Technology and Design exhibition

The bi-annual Technology and Design exhibition will be held in the Market Place Armagh on the 12th June and will run through to the 18th July. The theme of this year's exhibition will focus on CAD/CAM products and drawings. As previous we would like a contribution from every school so please bring along something on the HoD day. Health and Safety Training - Milling Machine

From the 26th May to the 5th June the Clounagh Centre will be hosting training on the safe use and operation of the milling machine. The training will be led by Roy MCMaw whom most of you may already know from the centre lathe and cirucular saw courses. There are still some places available. Drumglass College and St Catherine's College STEM Events

Both Drumglass High School and St Catherine's College recently ran a number of STEM events. In linking with local primary schools and outside agencies such as Sentinus, the respective Technology departments were able to deliver a number of high quality experiences and events for all pupils involved. The overall aim of these particular STEM programmes was to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths within post primary as well as primary schools. Bridge building projects, sketching and drawing, hydrogen power awareness and rocket design are just a few of the various events that took place over the second and third terms. National Award for St. Colman's College student

James Morgan (Kilcoo), winner of the Young Engineer for Britain regional finals held in the Odyssey Arena Belfast last June progressed to compete against other regional finalists at the ‘Big Bang’ Young Engineers and National Science Competition Fair in London 4th-6th March.
The event is a showcase of the highest level Engineering and Science projects carried out by students throughout the UK and Ireland.

Following three days of intensive judging James was awarded ‘Young Engineer for Britain National Winner for Design, Innovation and Presentation 2008-2009’.
James received a certificate, a crystal trophy and a cheque for £1000. In addition James was awarded a ‘Highly Commended’ prize for outstanding work from the National Science Competition in the technology category.

For his major A Level technology project James designed and manufactured a full size tractor mounted hydraulic power rake to remove large stones from ploughed fields or lawns prior to sowing.
The unit is mounted within a 7ft tractor link box and is powered by a hydraulic motor system. This motor drives a robust system of chain linked steel rakes which dislodge and pull all but the smallest stones into the link box. In doing so the machine also aerates and conditions the soil. The span of the system covers the tractor tyre tracks. The operator can then hydraulically elevate the power rake and tip the stones wherever hard fill is required.

This product was inspired by experience of gathering stones from fields manually and with only slight modifications the prototype should have great market potential. James is researching patents for his design.

As part of his display James presented a short video of the machine in operation. The judges were very impressed with the video and the innovative design of the prototype. James’s confident and knowledgeable presentation under rigorous questioning was another factor in winning the award.

When I mention June it tends to remind us automatically of planes and caravans, but you should really be thinking about Armagh! Yes it will soon be that time again when the Technology community in the SELB wheel out it's finest work for the Technology exhibition, due to take place in the Marketplace Armagh from Friday 12th June to Monday July 20th. Again we would like all schools to participate in this exhibition as a celebration and demonstration of the effort that exists within Technology and Design departments.

Top award for local schools

It was a case of 'hats off' for two local schools at a recent prizegiving ceremony at Stormont. Pupils from St Catherine's College Armagh and Newtownhamilton HS were awarded for achieving the highest marks in the UK, GCSE Technology and Design, AQA. The pupils received bursaries, sponsored by Construction skills in Northern Ireland, which were presented to them by David Ford, MLA. We would like to congratulate both schools on this fantastic achievement and wish the pupils the very best of success in their future careers.

STEM

The promotion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) has been established as an area of work within the current Programme for Government in Northern Ireland. As an element of this process the Department of Education has made funding available to undertake a range of activities and processes related to STEM. All schools are invited to apply as either an individual school, or as part of a cluster of schools working together. Any proposed STEM programme must run from 1 January 2009 to 31 March 2009. The purpose of the project will be to promote STEM with pupils and teachers in schools. For further detalils click here and here.

A new sketching resource has been added to clounagh.org. This sketching booklet has been developed with the aim to improve the sketching skills of pupils. This booklet builds upon those skills used in sketching booklet 1, improving techniques and learning how to draw some technological devices.

As you are all well aware any teacher or technician working in a Technology environment must hold the approprite qualifications in order to operate the circular saw and bandsaw. In conjuction with human resources in SELB HQ we are pleased to be able to offer a 2 day full training course in the safe use of the above mentioned equipment. Letters of invite have been sent out to all schools for this training which will take place on the 26th November and the 3rd December. Solidworks Refresher Training

This course is best suited for those who have yet to develop Solidworks within their technology environment, as most of the course will focus on simple drawing tasks best suited for KS3/4. Photostory Workshop

As part of our ongoing support for T&D teachers the Technology team at Clounagh are pleased to announce another ICT workshop. On the 11th November we will be hosting an afternoon session on using photostory in Technology and Design. The session will begin at 1.30 and finish at 3.30, with tea provided beforehand. Photostory is a digital way to show and tell your story using digital images. Just think about the potential of pupils evaluating their product digitally, explaining the functionality of their favourite gadget or describing a manufacturing process using digital images, narration or even music. A number of people have been enquiring for information on the latest spec changes within Edexcel A-Level . There is some information on the edexcel website which is helpful. However there seems to be a mood of teacher to teacher enquiry out there. YACAPACA - beginner clinic

Following on from day AOL2 in term 2 of the last academic year (07-08), we have noted some degree of success with YACAPACA in a number of schools. Let me refresh. YACAPACA is an online tool that allows you to create online quizzes, tests, surveys and more. Assessments can be shared, marked automatically and analysed by teachers and pupils to improve performance and learning. A few schools have already dipped their toe into the water and the feedback has been quite resounding to say the least. If you are interested in finding out more about YACAPACA and how it can enhance the learning in your T&D department then you might be interested in attending the starter session on Monday the 20th October, from 1.30 -3.30. Technology HoD Cluster

For those who were unable to attend the HoD cluster on the 16th June, here is a synopsis of what took place.

Jim Neale from New Wave Concepts (the people behind PCB WIZ, Livewire, Control Studio) demonstrated the new version of circuit wizard. I cannot explain in words how incredible or powerful this piece of software is. All I can say that in this is now the one stop shop for any electronics design, programming or simulation. There was also some very valuable input from both Lismore comprehensive and Clounagh JHS. Lismore gave a very interesting presentation on integrating CAD/CAM into the classroom, by providing working examples and information on CAD/CAM developments. Clounagh JHS provided an interesting session on their website which we have previously featured on this blog. The Clounagh centre would like to take this opportunity to thank both schools for their valuable input on the day.

These sticks are made for walking ...

We all hope it will be a long time before we actually need a walking stick. However for those country rambles, herding cattle or dare I say it 'Anti Burglar device' we all at some time have had a walking stick in our hand. Lismore comprehensive have taken this idea to the classroom where they have had great success in a project which requires the pupils to create a walking stick. The pupils are involved in researching the types of trees and particular branches that have the potential for making a good stick. This involves a field trip which helps them identify the necessary factors required to manufacture the project. Under the guidance and knowledge of Mr Art O'Neill (HoD) the pupils manipulate their raw stick into a finished product. There are a number of processes and cross curricular links involved in this project which can provide numerours learning outcomes for pupils. From AoL training day 2 we gave examples of some good practice in terms of the creative use of ICT in T&D. The Technology team at Clounagh Junior High School have used some of the ideas exhibited on the day and have produced their own excellent website http://clounaghtechnology.wordpress.com/ This is a really well designed and informative website which can be accessed by pupils to help scaffold their learning and understanding of Technology concepts. The website even translates with one click of a button into several other languages, providing access for foreign national pupils - Voila! Circular saw /bandsaw full training

Circular saw refresher training

This month sees the beginning of refresher training in the wadkin type circular saw and bandsaw. This refresher training takes place every three years and it is essential that all Technology teachers and technicians avail of this training to keep upto date in terms of Health and Safety requirements. The first day of training has already taken place and the courses will run every Tuesday until mid June. You will by now have received a letter indicating the day and date you are due to attend. The instructor for this course is Roy McMaw who you will know from previous training on the milling machine and centre lathe. If for some reason you have not received a letter of invite and feel you should be attending this training please contact Patricia Curran at the Clounagh Centre. Getting started with CAD/CAM day 2

Last November the Clounagh Centre hosted a one day course in the use of CAD/CAM in the curriculum. For those who were able to attend on that day we can now confirm the dates for the follow up - day 2. The dates are the 13th, 14th and 15th May based in the Clounagh Centre. The training will continue to focus on CAD/CAM in the curriculum as well as designing using Techsoft 2D design, circuit manufacture using PCB Design and Make and other tips and tricks. A confirmation letter confirming your place and date will be sent out soon.

Getting started with CAD/CAM

The Clounagh Centre recently ran a number of one day courses in getting started with CAD/CAM. These days were well attended by a number of schools and we have since received very positive feedback about the machines and their effective in the classroom. All schools were invited to take part in this course at which a single user copy of Techsoft 2D design was given out to those schools who did not have an existing licence. If you were unable to attend this course and would like a copy of Techsoft 2D design then contact the Clounagh Centre. Bomardier modern apprentice workshops

Bombardier will soon be recruiting for the Modern Apprentice Programme which commences in September 2008. To make pupils aware of what is on offer bombardier have put together a workshop called Your Career in Aerospace. The workshops will take place on Monday 28 January, Monday 11 February & Thursday 13 March from 10:30am to 12:30pm in W5. Your Career in Aerospace has been funded by the Skills and Science initiative. Transport and admission are provided free of charge to post primary schools in Northern Ireland for pupils in year 10 and above. The minimum size for a group is 20 pupils.

These days are related to the revised curriculum at KS3 and will follow a similar format to last year, although the content will be different as we are now into the first year of the revised curriculum.
